The Portland Chapter of the International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants (formerly Portland Chapter of RCI, Inc.) invites all consultants, contractors, students, and design professionals practicing in the roofing, waterproofing and building enclosure fields to attend a Chapter Meeting & Educational Presentation on Mechanical Exhaust Vents and Condensation.
Many factors contribute to condensation problems in low slope roof systems installed over wood decks with insulation below – high interior RH, high solar reflectance, and especially air intrusion. Another contributor isn’t talked about much – warm humid air leaking from improperly terminated exhaust vents. But when it creates a problem, roof professionals are often asked to explain why they did not “correct” the improper terminations before they installed new vent flashing assemblies over and around them.
This presentation, “Mechanical Exhaust Vents and Condensation”, will address:
Why complete discharge of exhaust air, especially gas combustion products, is so important.
Code requirements for termination of exhaust vents (gas vents and environmental air ducts).
Telltale signs of existing condensation problems.
Ways to avoid exhaust vent related condensation problems.
Phil Dregger is a Professional Engineer, Registered Roof Consultant, Fellow of the International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants (formerly RCI), and Vice President of Salas O’Brien in Concord, CA. Phil has investigated problems in a wide range of roof and building envelop systems over the past 35 years. He has special expertise in wind/hurricane damage, building code compliance, and condensation problems. Phil lectures often to industry groups, has authored many articles on roof technology, and is a recent recipient of the ASTM D08 William C Cullen Award and the IIBEC/RCI Lifetime Achievement Award.
